I have just started using Magic Mirror Backup, and like the concept very much. I would like to backup to a peer over the internet instead of just LAN computers as I understand the system currently works. I don't want to backup to a centrally managed server, and I don't want to setup my own PHP server. Instead, I want to have a friend in a different state as a peer, so that I gain the offsite backup value with minimal complexity. Is this possible right now? Is there end to end encryption?

Looks like you have a great start, nice work. In case it helps any, I am a software engineer with a moderate amount of experience in Java development.

Mr. Bishop,

Sharing backups with a friend is possible now, though there are some caveats. At least one of you would need a static IP address. You may need to forward a port in your firewall or NAT router. Also, as you point out, there is no end to end encryption - the backup itself is encrypted, but some of the communications have more lightweight protection. You could address all these problems in one shot by using an SSH tunnel, but that too might go against your desire for minimal complexity.

We have actually been considering releasing Magic Mirror Backup as open source. Would you be interested in getting the source for it? You could then make it do what you want and contribute the changes back if it does become open source.

Thanks,
Tim Macinta
